Learning Toys
Because children are constantly interacting and learning
about the world many educators have argued that almost all toys can
be learning toys. However, toy manufacturers market specific toys for
learning. These toys advertise that they promote intellectual or emotional
development and growth.
Books can be learning toys. Children love to be read to by adults.
Interacting with language and stories promotes both intellectual and
emotional development.
For years educators thought stories such as the Dick and Jane series
were good learning toys. However, Dr. Seuss stories based on wild adventures
soon replaced more mundane stories when children showed great interest
in language play and imagination. Now Dr. Seuss stories sell millions
of copies each year.
